Moving Right Along!

Second graders are moving right along through their year!

English Language Arts - Students have been learning and exploring nonfiction and its text features such as photographs/captions, headings, table of contents, and glossary.  We began our exploration comparing fiction and nonfiction texts, moved to using each feature in the context of different texts, and are now in guided groups reading nonfiction.  Students also completed their BEST PET EVER writing and illustrated their pets to accompany their writing on display in the hallway. They might even persuade you to get a pet you otherwise may not have chosen.  Proper nouns, possessive nouns, plural nouns, and adjectives have also been a focus as students work with mentor sentences that come from some of our favorite picture books.

Math - We have some fabulous mathematicians in the house!  Problem solving with addition and subtraction has been a great focus so far this year along with understanding strategies for mastery of basic addition facts.  Students have also ventured into understanding three digit place value.  Much fun and learning is always going on in 2M!

Science - What's the matter?  Students have been learning about the states of matter and their properties.  Upon returning from Thanksgiving break, students will be given some mystery matter to explore---Will they figure out what each mystery matter really is?

Social Studies - Good citizenship is a must!  Therefore, students have learned the traits they can possess to be a good citizen in their school and community.  Students also learned about the importance of voting around election day.  They have also taken a little step back in time to learn about the ways of life in the time of the Pilgrims and Native Americans.

We are on our way and building speed--as we move right along TOGETHER!
